Our First Overseas Adventure

Date: Monday, April 10th 2017 1pm to Wednesday, April 12th 2017 12am.

This trip was a perfect example of how things are out of your hands, no matter how well you tie your camel.

We were excited! So pumped!

We were so full of life at the beginning lol

I planned every step, as thoroughly as possible. I thought of every possible issue and had a backup plan for each one. Every possible issue….except for Texas’s weather

blank expression

Thanks to the thunderstorm, we were so delayed that ended up staying in DFW for another EIGHT HOURS which caused us to:

  • miss our connecting flight from Detroit to Amsterdam
  • miss our connecting, separately purchased flight from Istanbul to Antalya
  • spend an extra night in Atlanta (on Delta, of course)
  • make a 20 hour trip into an almost 46 hour trip

It was crazy. M spent almost 2 hours on the phone trying to fix the problem with Delta Airlines. He was also really sick with a fever. In that moment, it was the worst possible outcome.

24 hours after the situation, we were boarded on an ATL to AMS flight (~8 hr flight) and all I could think was, “Thank God for that storm. It gave us another night of extra rest and M’s fever is gone.” You never know. What might look like a horrible situation, in the moment, might actually do you some good. Between landing in Atlanta and departing Amsterdam for Istanbul, it was the smoothest, most relaxing experience.

Once we landed in Istanbul, we spent the next few hours scrambling for our bags, prayer, discussing our previous days missed flights, buying new tickets. We walked so much we both hit our step goal even though we’d spent most of our day sitting in air lol. But thank God we made it safely to Antalya. Everyone in Turkey was really nice and helpful. They tried to communicate with us, let us borrow their phones to call M’s friend, find us a taxi, suggest places to go, etc. May Allah reward everyone who helped us on this journey. Like seriously. We’d still be lost in Ataturk Airport without them lol.

Once we got to the apartment, we threw our stuff in the room, ate the best tasting pizza ever (homemade by M’sfriend’s wife), and then proceeded to sleep for 12 hours lol.

I know it’s been like 3 or 4 days since we left but it was all travel. Now begins building what we want here.

Keep us in your duaas!
